Psychiatric Medication Consultation (PMC) is an outpatient visit focused on evaluating mental health symptoms and tailoring a medication plan to improve stability, functioning, and quality of life.
Purpose

Clarify diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, or psychotic disorders and determine if medication is indicated.

Optimize current medications for effectiveness and tolerability, and reduce side effects or unnecessary drugs.
What happens

Detailed review of symptoms, history, prior treatments, current medications, and substance use, often including rating scales or questionnaires.

Discussion of medication options, expected benefits, side effects, monitoring needs, and alternatives such as psychotherapy or lifestyle changes.

Development of a collaborative treatment plan, including follow-up schedule and how to handle side effects or crises.
What to bring

List of all medications, supplements, and past psychiatric drugs (with doses and how they worked or what side effects occurred).

Notes on current symptoms, triggers, sleep, substance use, and any prior hospitalizations or therapy, plus questions and treatment goals.
