Intellectual & Physical Development Disability Medication Consultation. (IDD/PD)

Intellectual & Physical Development Disability (IDD/PD) medication consultation is a specialized review of medications for people with developmental and physical disabilities, focused on safety, effectiveness, and quality of life in the context of complex needs.

Purpose
  • Address polypharmacy, psychotropic use, and seizure or behavior-related medications while minimizing side effects and overmedication.

  • Align treatment with the person’s functional abilities, communication needs, support environment, and long‑term health goals.

What happens
  • Comprehensive review of all prescriptions, over‑the‑counter drugs, and supplements, with input from caregivers and review of records, labs, and behavior data.

  • Identification of medication-related problems (e.g., interactions, sedation, behavioral changes) and development of recommendations such as dose changes, deprescribing, or added monitoring.

  • Creation of a coordinated care plan that integrates medical, behavioral, and environmental strategies, shared back to the primary clinician and support team.

What to bring
  • Updated medication list, prior evaluations, behavior or seizure logs, and information about mobility, communication, and daily supports.

  • Questions or concerns from the person and caregivers about side effects, behavior changes, sleep, appetite, pain, or function.
